Mainstage Musical:
Shrek Jr.!

Ages 9-17

Mondays, 5:15-7:30 PM

Columbine United Church

It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance.  When Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale characters who have been cast out by Lord Farquaad, he sets off with a wisecracking Doneky to confront the villain and is given the task of rescuing the feisty Princess Fiona. With a few twists and turns, wildly catchy music, and a large cast of hilarious characters,Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

About

The Mainstage Musical is Stagebugz's big event of the season, where performers ages 9-17 of all experience levels work to present a two-act, full-scale musical! This program is designed to bring together the Stagebugz community, with exciting roles for all participants and opportunities for each student to highlight their strengths and develop new ones. Actors will spend time in peer groups where they'll bond with other students their age while still working with and learning from those older and younger than them, though all material and activities will be kept age-appropriate. Performers will spend rehearsal time singing popular Broadway songs, learning thrilling dances, and exploring character study and basic script analysis as they develop their show. They will learn skills and techniques to carry with them in any future path they choose, all while making lifelong friends and participating in the magic of live theatre. The production ends with a full tech week, followed by a weekend of performances for family, friends, and fans!

Auditions and Casting

Registered performers will sign up for a 5-minute audition slot on Wednesday, January 15, and should prepare 60 seconds of each a song and a monologue of their choosing. An audition sign-up will be sent out to participants in early January. Students unavailable to attend may submit a video audition; please email stagebugztheatre@gmail.com for more information.

Callbacks (by invitation) will be held on Friday, January 17th, from 5:15 PM-7:30 PM. Not all students will be required to attend; being invited to callbacks is not a good or a bad thing!

We never want auditions to be overwhelming for any child. If your performer does not wish to audition, please email stagebugztheatre@gmail.com after registering and we will place them in a role where they can shine and grow! Or, if your child needs help finding and/or preparing their material, check out our AUDITION GUIDE. We are here to make the process as stress-free as possible and are more than happy to help!

Every student is guaranteed a role with at least one line and one solo upon registering, and our small class sizes ensure that each performer receives ample time in the spotlight. Auditions simply help us to determine where everyone will learn the most and have the best experience. We do our best to find a role that each child will be excited about, but please remember that in Stagebugz shows, there truly are no small parts. Additionally, many factors go into casting a show, and not receiving their desired role is not a reflection of a child's level of talent.

Parent Volunteers

For this program, there is a minimum of two volunteer hours required for each registered performer. Volunteer hours may be completed by parents/guardians, a friend or family member, or the performer (if they are 13+). More information and sign-ups will be sent out after the start of rehearsals, but volunteers are primarily needed during tech week and the run of the show, and generally cover positions such as green room chaperones, costume/prop assistants, stagehands, ticket/concession sales, and ushers. There will be volunteer opportunities outside of this time frame, as well as positions that can be completed at home, for families who are unavailable.

All students will be required to help with strike after the final performance; this does not count towards volunteer hours. However, there will be other opportunities for students to volunteer instead of parents for things like load-in and set painting.

Families who prefer not to complete volunteer hours may pay an opt-out fee of $40 per registered student.

*We do not want volunteer hours to be the reason any child cannot participate! If there are extenuating circumstances and no one is able to volunteer for your child and you are unable to pay the opt-out fee, please email stagebugztheatre@gmail.com.

*Please Note: Program dates, times, and location subject to change. Stagebugz Theatre can offer no refunds or transfers for drops, postponements, or other issues arising out of COVID-19 or any other unanticipated safety emergency.
